Most every band has experienced a Spinal Tap Moment, where they must overcome the disastrous and the absurd and deliver quality work that spells FUN and produces record sales. In this session we’ll discuss how to employ the fun factor to overcome difficult circumstances with your band member, engineer or producer in the studio, or music director on stage. Hear tips from Spinal Tap producer and keybordist CJ *Vanston (Steve Lukather, Prince, Barbara Streisand), and bassist and producer Brent Fischer (The Roots, Prince, Michael Jackson, Usher) along with their award-winning engineers Steve Genewick (Martina McBride, Michael Bublé, Paul McCartney) and Matt Brownlie (LL Cool J, Destiny’s Child, The Brent Fischer Orchestra). Their discussion will reveal how to resolve conflicts, work around technical challenges, share fun-inspired production secrets, and demonstrate ways to create a unique sound that leaves audiences smiling.
Moderated by Claris Sayadian-Dodge, of studioexpresso.com.
*Vanston also goes on stage with Spinal Tap as their keyboard player and music director when they perform shows at Carnegie Hall, The Sydney opera House, or at the Wembley Stadium or on the Tonight Show. He served as a writing/production partner for Steve Lukather; scored most of Christopher Guest’s movies to include Mighty Wind, and Best In Show. In September of 2025 Vanston joined the legendary Elton John on the Spinal Tap song, Stoneheng music video (below). The accompanying new Mockumentary Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (tailer below), directed by Rob Reiner is in theaters now!
We will leave time for your questions.
