Vai's Story of Light Mastered

Virtuoso guitarist, visionary composer and 2012 TEC Award-winner Steve Vai has mastered his
new album "The Story of Light" at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. Its sprawling and expressive 12-song set continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc begun on the artist's acclaimed 2005 album "Real Illusions: Reflections" (also Vai's most recent solo studio release).
"Bernie has an intuitive ear and he's still excited about what he listens to," commented Vai during the mastering sessions. Throughout the new album, three-time GRAMMY-winner Vai's lead guitar is as lyrically resonant as it is technically masterful, his licks and solos bending sounds and listeners' minds in equal measure. "The Story of Light" follows the journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment, and redemption. To be released on August 14, "The Story of Light" is available for online pre-sale orders exclusively through Vai's website or visit Mothership Studios

Analog Rules At Avatar

Some studios are still using a lot of tape. In fact, according to Tino Passante, VP of Operations at Avatar, close to 60 reels of analog tape were used during the first quarter of this year. "The bulk of them were used by producer T Bone Burnett on his projects such as The Hunger Games soundtrack, music for the Coen Brothers' film Inside Llewyn Davis as well as the latest Diana Krall project," says Passante . The summer movie season brings more projects. Upcoming films with music recorded at Avatar include Moonrise Kingdom (film score), Inside Llewyn Davis (source music), Hope Springs (film score), and Killing Them Softly (source music, which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival). Avatar's utility suites - Studio E (pictured right) and Studio W (shown on left) - have been busy with a wide variety of projects. These include audio books, ESL (English as a Second Language) content, voice overs, corporate & professional presentations as well as overdubbing / editing in conjunction with our other tracking rooms for large scale projects

Forever Miles & Piaf
America and France pay tribute to two iconic musicians, the influential jazz trumpeter Miles Davis after 21 years after his death along with legendary French singer Edith Piaf. The stamps were issued last Tuesday by both the United States Postal Service and France's postal agency La Poste.
In a ceremony at the Rubin Museum of Art of Art in New York City, the stamps were unveiled in front of a crowd that included Davis' son Erin Davis, daughter Cheryl Davis, and nephew Vince Wilburn, Jr., as well as Blue Note Records chief creative officer Don Was, SiriusXM program director Mark Ruffin, jazz bassist Ron Carter, producer George Avakian, actress Cicely Tyson, and U.S. deputy postmaster general Ronald Stroman, who dedicated the stamps. Avakian, who was a longtime producer for Columbia and worked to sign Davis early in his career, spoke along with Tyson and Was. A trumpet trio from Davis' alma mater Juilliard performed "So What," "Human Nature" and "Kind of Blue" with the help of a rhythm section. Los Angeles will host a second stamp dedication June 27, which will be followed by a "Miles Davis Celebration" concert hosted by Herbie Hancock at Hollywood Bowl. Hancock will be providing the musical score for an upcoming feature film starring Don Cheadle and based on Davis' life.

DMX Wins Landmark Decision Against ASCAP And BMI Did you know 70% of retailers believe music increases sales? DMX is an industry pioneer with 40 years of experience providing on-site marketing solutions to businesses of all types and sizes. DMX began directly licensing musical compositions for use in DMX services in 2006 rather than relying solely on licenses provided by performing rights organizations such as ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC . DMX saw this as a way to compensate publishers directly as well as a way to achieve savings in an increasingly competitive industry. It also set a precedent allowing publishers to negotiate and license their music directly with commercial music providers such as DMX and Muzak. We're also excited about what this means for our ability to curate great music from even more artists and share that with our clients and their customers," said Craug Harrison, Global Director of Content/ Licensing for Mood Media. The new fee structures were incorporated into DMX's model after the initial court ruling in 2010. Last week's decision ensures that the new fee structures will remain and DMX will continue to be able to pass along greater value to its clients. Next time you're shopping for a shirt or pair of sneakers, it can be your song on the store playlist!

Prague-born Deml grew up in Germany, where he founded his first band (Quest) at the tender age of 16. After completing his schooling he moved to the USA, studying at the Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles alongside luminaries such as Larry Carlton, Scott Henderson and Paul Gilbert. Just two years later he was already teaching at the Institute himself and playing as a tour and session guitarist in California, including work on projects by Carmine Appice and Randy Jackson. After five years his residence permit expired and he returned to Europe. In 1993 he teamed up with keyboard player Ralf Hildenbeutel to set up the ambient-meets-guitar project Earth Nation, which a year later caused a stir at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In the following years, Deml evolved into a sought-after session and live musician. He now has over 300 sessions to his name – including work for Kingdom Come, Nena, Rick Astley, Snap and Laith Al-Deen. He has also toured with Saga, the Rödelheim Hartreim Projekt and Simon Collins, to name but a few. To date, he has released three studio albums with Errorhead – the last being the awesome "Modern Hippie" (2008) – plus a live album and a concert DVD. He has also lived out his passion for jazz rock in the Electric Outlet project. He is presently focused exclusively on Errorhead, however, who are now releasing their first album for the Rock The Earth label. Organic Pill tour begins end of June

This year, at Wimbledon matches Anastasia Pavluchenkova is taking a different tact in bringing some color to the Tennis courts. While the strict white guidelines offer proscriptions as it comes to clothing, hats, and shoes, they say nothing with regard to every woman's favorite accessory: hair. As such, the Russian world No.33 visited the Clay Salon and Spa in Surrey and, channeling her inner Gwen Stefani, had her hair coloured hot pink as part of her pre-tournament preparations. Forehand? Check. Backhand? Check. Punk rock hair? Double check.

" Warner had a chance to outbid Universal in this process, but chose to walk away. Now they regret their decision and are spending millions to fight the deal."
--Irving Azoff, executive chairman of Live Nation Entertainment Inc

"This merger grants to Universal the sole right to determine what digital services live and what digital services die."
-- Edgar Bronfman Jr., Warner Music Group director

Azoff and Bronfman speaking to the antitrust subcommittee last week on the merger which critics charge would give Universal more than a 40% share of the US market for recorded music. Universal has made a commitment to revive EMI's Capitol Records. The opponents of the transaction — led by Warner Music Group director Edgar Bronfman Jr. — urged lawmakers to block a deal that would merge two of the four largest record labels, and according to critics, give Universal undue power over the distribution of music online. The proposed deal is currently under review by the Federal Trade Commission.

Give Bieber A Break!

This month the trades report that Justin Bieber got a very lackluster 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demo and scored just 3.3 million viewers- about half the number of top rated "So You Think You Can Dance" on Fox. It was also beaten by "Dogs in the City." Seriously folks, since when does a solo debut artist compete with TV series or the circus? I suppose the projected 400k sales of his album "Believe" within the first week is just not good enough. Could it be that he's made to look like Elvis or sound like someone else? There goes artist development! “I think I can grow as an artist and my fans will grow with me,” says Justin. Here's looking at you kid!
