Celebrity
endorsers Sir
George Martin and rapper LL
Cool J took the stage, and in separate testimonials, both
briefly talked about how and why (for them) WM 9 Series will
facilitate the ways consumers will enjoy media and entertainment.
Microsoft
introduces Windows
Media9, a new digital content-delivery platform that allows
high-speed online streaming, along with home-theater-quality
audio and video-starting with Peter
Gabriel's new album "Up."
The new Hollywood Highlands Media Complex in downtown Hollywood
was "the place to be" this past week for the launch
of the public beta version of Microsoft's windows Media 9
(WM 9) Series platform.
Microsoft
Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates hosted the
evening's festive soiree attended by more than 1,000 media,
entertainment executives, technology pros and about 60 third-party
development partners.
The tutorial/presentation
kicked off with Academy Award-winning film director and digital
image/film maven James Cameron (Titanic, The Terminator) describing
his use of Windows Media for a recent webcast of his underwater
Titanic 3D film. Gates followed with his vision of the rest
of this decade he calls the "digital decade," a
concept he supports with four pillars:
- offer
content in flexible form for use in honest markets (read that
as users will pay for it);
- educational
dialogs with young people, making sure they understand that
content providers need and want to be paid like any other
hard worker in the world;
- policy
implementation to enforce DRM (that's Digital Rights Management);
- and
technology that protects DRM by way of a digital "envelope"
that surrounds and encrypts all WM9 Series content.

Digidesign
Announces Pro Tools 5.3.3. for Pro Tools|HD on Windows XP
and SCSI|128 - Host Adapter for Pro Tools|HD
NOW SHIPPING!
Digidesign®
is pleased to announce the SCSI|128 kit, the SCSI solution
for Pro Tools|HD. SCSI|128 accomplishes two significant tasks.
First, it offers 128 tracks of record and playback with Pro
Tools|HD on both Mac and Windows when used with LVD drives.
Second, its built-in LVD support results in improved data
integrity, and allows for longer cable lengths - up to 12.5
meters (41 feet) per bus - to accommodate effective placement
of your LVD-supported SCSI drives.
The SCSI|128
kit, which ships with the ATTO UL3D Dual Channel Ultra3 SCSI
Host Adapter and two cables, comes pre-tuned for optimal performance
with Pro Tools|HD. The UL3D's two external channels handle
throughput up to 160 MB/second per channel. The SCSI|128 kit
also supports up to 64 audio tracks on Pro Tools|24 MIX and
d24 systems on both Mac and Windows.
For more
information, please e-mail Chandra
Lynn, press & artist relations manager, or call 650-731-6688.
Todd/Soundelux
Upgrades to Pro Tools|HD
Santa Monica-based Todd/Soundelux
has upgraded 22 Digidesign Pro Tools|24 MIX systems to Pro
Tools|HD workstations and will be installing the new systems
this fall.
Todd/Soundelux is an "end-to-end" service provider
with client-friendly facilities and is a leader in audio production
and post production for feature films, television series,
commercials, and new media. Todd/Soudelux supports two major
music studios, Todd AO Scoring and Signet Sound, which specialize
in scoring and score mixing. "These facilities have many
clients who are beginning to insist on using Pro Tools|HD,"
states Bill Johnston, Todd/Soundelux vice president, engineering.
"We are upgrading now in order to insure that our facilities
are offering the most current, best-sounding and technically
advanced technology."
Todd/Soundelux attributes its main reasons for moving to Pro
Tools|HD to the increased power and audio track count that
the system affords. Currently, it has four TV post-production
rooms that use five Pro Tools systems with custom ProControl
and Control24 console configurations. Todd/Soundelux was also
attracted to the excellent sound quality of Pro Tools|HD.

Soundtracks
to the Stars

Lamont Dozier with Disc Marketing CEO
Tena Clark at Firehouse
Recording Studios, site of one of his latest projects
Tena Clark has penned hits for Patti Labelle, written jingles
for McDonald's ("Have you had your break today"),
and produces enhanced CDs for United Airlines and Air Force
One. But Clark says her latest project that has given her the
most satisfaction is NASA who hired her to come up with a theme
song for the space program. Fittingly, Clark wrote the tune,
"Way Up There," at 30,000 feet somewhere between New
York and Los Angeles. The Song proved so popular that it has
also been adopted as theme song for next year's "Centenial
of Flight," national celebration being sponsored by NASA
and several corporations. She's keeping mum on names, but Clark
said that four well-known musicians would record the song in
collaboration during the next couple of months. "This has
been very personal for me. It's much more than just another
song," Clark said. "If you think of how many places
this song will be played - from the Kennedy Center to Kitty
Hawk - it's very special."
Spacey
to Ramone and a Mancini Musicale
"I want to talk to you as a singer," Academy Award-winning
actor Kevin Spacey told the crowd gathered to honor Phil
Ramone, legendary record producer/engineer, at the Mancini
Musicale at UCLA's Royce Hall. "Phil and I have been
quietly working for the past year on my preparation to play
Bobby Darin" in a film, Spacey said. "And I've got
to tell you what it's like to be in a studio with Phil Ramone
- it's like having a great chef, a rich interpreter, your
daddy, a psychiatrist
this is what he's probably done
for every artist he has worked with in his extraordinary career."
Then Spacey, head cocked and fingers snapping, broke into
an a capella version of "I found a New Baby," a
la '50's pop idol, Darin. "Without Dr. Phil - the real
Dr Phil - I wouldn't have had the guts to do that," Spacey
said. The Actor's appearance at the Aug 17 benefit that raised
$220,000 for the Henry Mancini Institute was a surprise to
Ramone, who was there to receive the Hank Award. The award
- given annually to an artist who, besides having a successful
musical career, regularly mentors aspiring musicians - is
named for Mancini, composer of such pop standards as "Moon
River." "I'm choked up," said Ramone, an impresario
who has worked with Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Billy
Joel and Paul McCartney. "This honor is one of the greatest
thrills I've ever had." About 350 guests paid $275 each
to dine on the Ahmanson Terrace before enjoying the musicale
featuring the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra under the
baton of artistic director Patrick Williams. Included on the
program: a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald by singer Patti Austin
and a performance by jazz pianist Gerald Clayton. Each year,
the institute presents scholarships to emerging professional
musicians who, for four weeks, train with Williams on the
UCLA campus, said Ginny Mancini, president. "We must
nurture the next generation of musicians or we won't have
any good music at all."
